Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script

Someone has already chosen which story is worth the bet before anyone calls «action» on a short drama set. If you trace a few hits backward, you often come across a book at the start of the chain. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child, is based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage Found My Daddy at the Construction Site short drama series that ReelShort launched on November 1, 2025, is based on a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, a web novel and webtoon lie behind the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating. Source material sits close at hand as a number of app owners also operate reading businesses: Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. Writers fall back on reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama where no book exists. The script has a single job: to compress a long drama story into scenes that each land a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

It is in casting that the format’s economics show up on screen. Scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep turning up. Noah Fearnley headlined ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort in 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, appearing opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. With a following on one app, a lead gets a head start at the next title, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles. Studios also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days

TheWrap puts the typical cost of a Western short drama at $150,000 to $300,000 per series, with the shoot taking eight to ten days. A similar picture comes from Wikipedia’s overview of the format, which places a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. A 70-episode series shot in eight days translates into close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day, as the arithmetic shows. Slimmer numbers still have been reported by Chinese producers selling abroad, with Jiuzhou Culture pegging a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Jiuzhou also said that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. The costly shoot has to happen only once when a studio can reuse a finished domestic series through dubbing.

Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds

The footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing suite, each framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. Each episode is built around a question the next one promises to answer, because at that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that carries you from one episode to the next. Roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time is what a 70-episode series amounts to when those slivers are stacked together. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen shows 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return is listed with 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. ReelShort also operates official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, allowing the same footage get to viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Picking Where the Paywall Falls

The final creative decision is commercial as well. Free viewing covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap lays out. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Coins unlock the episodes that follow, and according to ReelShort’s blog the standard cost of an episode is about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so your store may display something different. Paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the contentious part. Coin generators and modded «unlimited coins» apps offering a way around the wall are unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation

The camera disappears entirely in the latest production stage. Animated motion comics now sit alongside ReelShort’s live-action catalogue. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as «Johnny» and in the end unmasks the foster sister who repeatedly framed him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. This title should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares its name. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which means the app has gone furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Beyond the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it «AI slop».

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Fox Entertainment is the most obvious example of traditional studios noticing. Fox took an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, in October 2025. Fox also made a commitment to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. In January 2026, Holywater secured a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. That a network-scale producer is committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has gone from curiosity to line item.

A Quick Look at the Production Line

The logic of the business becomes clear when the stages are put side by side. The shoot is the expensive, fixed block, and much of the rest is organized around it. Scripts usually come pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting relies on known faces, and the edit is built around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a «reel short drama» usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The typical time and cost at each stage are laid out in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. Where no reliable figure has been published, it says so rather than guessing.

Production stage Usual time / cost What happens
Source material and script No public number A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No published figure Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step
